I have boring dreams mostly. Whatever I did the day before, I re-dream it while I'm sleeping. My husband tells me about his vivid, super hero-movie quality dreams in which he's fighting for justice...and I think, "Yeah. I drove to Hamden and back in my sleep."

I love this. Just when I was seriously, meaningfully nodding my head, "Yes, yes, yes, Abby is so smart and insightful..." you stick the landing with genitals. Ha! Thanks for the reminder not to take myself too seriously.

Oh, I don't know . . . some nights I wish I could turn off my incessant dreaming and get some sleep. Although, lately, my daughter has been coming by and it's nice to spend time with her again, so I guess I won't wish away my dreams just yet.

My dreams are usually my brain trying to solve a self-imposed, ridiculous, insoluble sheep-wolf-canoe problem. Endlessly rearranging the pieces to see how they'll fit and then suddenly I notice that it's not a canoe; it's a car ferry and I can make money on the side if only I can figure out how to fit all these cars on most efficiently...

Oh, the old sheep, wolf, canoe problem. But trying to fit too many cars on the ferry sounds very annoyingly tough.

How funny! I have been listening to the great Clarissa Pinkola Estes explain how to interpret dreams and this morning was the first time I woke and actually tried to catch the memories of what I had just dreamt before they disappeared. It’s so hard to do- dreams never let you look them square in the face. You have to sort of see them with peripheral vision. I won’t bore you with the details, but according to my dream, I am center stage but the last to know when the plan changes, I am a house overflowing with people- so much so that I sway and threaten to collapse, I am Martha Beck (she’s gotten way into my psyche, turns out).

Years ago I joined a cancer support group that did dream work. It was really fascinating to find that I remembered my dreams if I had pen/paper handy to write them down as soon as I woke up. Before trying it I would have sworn I didn’t dream except for my night terrors. Now I don’t sleep enough to dream it seems…..I come from a long line of insomniacs but the night terrors have thankfully ended.

Did remembering your dreams help with the end of your night terrors? I can;t think of anything much worse than that affliction. Happy for you.

Sorry to say that my night terrors ended when my mother died.

I'm sirry. Why?

My brother and I both had night terrors due to the chaos in the home where we were raised. Once both parents were gone my night terrors ended. Took until I was 55 for that to happen.

Thank you, Abigail but No, I am definitely not a writer….IT professional with a degree in math and physics who admires those who are gifted as writers. When someone says I should write a book about my life I say it was already written by Jeanette Walls….The Glass Castle. It really isn’t anything I want to relive anyway.

Yes, sleep is definitely a genital. Who doesn't get horny for it, once it becomes elusive? I've had stories come to me in dreams. I wonder if Delmore Schwartz dreamed "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities," which feels so convincingly dreamlike. Or am I insulting his artistry by asking the question?

of course not! If he had the dream, it's his!

The dream I had before I met you came true. You were in this big house walking around reciting your book. Nothing could interrupt your flow and focus. Telling about a story of your daughter and a man who became your husband. Powerful.

I dreamed something similar three times.

As you said, I am the dream, the dream-maker, the big house, the book, the reader, you, the husband, the daughter, most importantly the intent, focus, flow— the energy and direction in which the dream is moving.

This is how are dreams help us.

Ask this question:

What is the dream telling us that we don't already know?

It takes practice to remember dreams.

I find them fascinating like the voice that said:

"I don't like his baggy pants

But I'm curious about what's beneath them."
