You've been grieving all this time and I think the gift of gratitude tempers grief. I think of it as grace taking grief in its arms and holding it with love. I met Chuck a few times in Woodstock over the years. He was lovely, generous toward me, as handsome as you say, and smart and funny as fuck. Those kind of friendships; if you have just one in your life you're so very lucky. I have one friend like that. She's a treasure. xo

The intimate question of what it is we long for, and his answer: "There isn't any it,” he said," there is only the longing." That's the stuff of the close friendship that I long for, knowing that at the end of the day, as your friend pointed out, "there is only longing." But I go on wanting and aching just the same.
