Lovely and sexy and I know what you looked like when you were 48, and you also were too cute to stay home...xo

Thank you, Nan. So nice of you.

Oh Abigail, you are such a scamp! Thank you for that! I wish you’d post the photo of “Too Cute to Stay Home”!!!!

Please?????

Just recently I wrote a note to writer friends regarding enlightenment being out of my reach though I imagined it was also most likely highly overrated. Ditto perfection. What I didn't write about was my unspoken reaction to a young (55 qualifies as young), strapping, muscular (oh those arms), kilted, bagpipe player as he entertained an audience of several hundred people. May I please share in the pleasure you expressed in this exquisite telltale line: "but today I’m surrendering to the pleasure of this photograph, and the longing it awakens, grateful that I can still be undone."

So glad you wrote about it now. Oh sigh.

Thank you, AGAIN, for reminding us all that it's only if we are willing to tell the truth of our lives, that our lives will matter.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Even if only to ourselves, but I think if we can manage that , some things will be better.

“Stay,” the half-naked Plumb Bob Man said. And, in her inside heart, she did. You can do more with one word. Abagail, than the rest of us with a novel.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

That's very nice of you to say. I couldn't write a novel if my life depended on it. But thank you very much.

Cannot tell if my first response made it through to you, so will repeat and resend now. You do not need length, Abigail. You and Hemingway can say and slay in 6 words or less. SUCH fabulous talent!!!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

I can’t remember if you got my reply, this messaging thing has me flummoxed sometimes, but THANK YOU for such a compliment.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you very much.It was fun to remember, although maybe fun is the wrong word.

You don’t need length, Abigail. You and Hemingway can convey and slay in 6 words or less. SUCH a talent!!!

Oooowee, this was a delight to read. Like a literary chocolate truffle on an otherwise humdrum day. It got me thinking about a long ago afternoon encounter on a summer beach...a beautiful big romance that fit into my back pocket. Thank you for stirring me up!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

love that it fit in your back pocket.

I love this so much. Thank you!

Loving this! Brings to mind a memory of a similar man in my life. What a time that was!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

We've all got one or two of them, right? Lovely to remember.

Susan K's avatar

REMEMBER is the key word here ... I'm pretty sure almost all of them are better in the sweet golden haze of the past than they were in real time.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Not this one, but yeah. Some of them were.

Luciana23's avatar

And we will always have them, because we remember.

Wendy Varley's avatar

What a memory to relish, Abigail!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

You're not kidding. Yes. and thank you.

As a carpenter and a poet, I’m pissed I didn’t think of “the plumb line is God.”

Fuck. He’s so right.

I've never read "Getting Over Tom," but I will find it this week but I imagine it won't be quite the same as reading these few paragraphs. I've thrown out so many photos and notes that could flash me back to undone moments. I'm glad you have not.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you. Me too.
