Too old and dumb to figure out where to say thank you to everyone who reponded so wonderfully and wittily and heartfeltly to my last essay about the hospital. I discovered you don’t just bounce back and will answer everyone slowly and carefully, but meanwhile, this is just to say how very grateful I am to have such pals in the writing world here on Substack. Thank you. And I’ll answer everybody, it just might take a little time. But wow, you made me feel so good.

Well, I'm too old and dumb to know how to find an essay I missed on Substack, but I'm glad as hell you're out of the hospital and thanking everybody in sight. Pamper yourself insanely. Pretend you're a dog who lives with Abigail Thomas: Let everyone pet you, take loads of naps, and just bask.
You are the most honest writer I have ever read, and I’m old too, and I’ve read a lot. Everything you write resonates way below the surface, which is why your readers love you so much. That’s not “old and dumb.” It’s brilliant. Also spirit-restoring in the dumbed-down world we now find ourselves trapped in. Just recover. Don’t worry about responding to us! Maybe make yourself some of Big Mama’s Mac and cheese! (Which I haven’t stopped fantasizing about since I read about it in What Comes Next). Love to you and Olive and Daphne ♥️
