Something New
SOMETHING NEW
I am learning something new every day. Granted, it’s the same thing, but I learn it over and over with the same startled awareness. I look out at the lush green expanse behind my house, the small meadow beyond that, gazing with pleasure at everything growing, but especially my locust, loving the spread of its branches, and at the same moment, or a moment later, I remember this is not really my green yard, and not really my locust. Mine to appreciate, to care for while I live, but I don’t really own anything. What is mine to keep? Secrets, maybe. Nothing else. Mortality is hitting home in interesting ways, but it doesn’t diminish the pleasure I take in the way that locust fills the sky.

What is yours to keep? Secrets, maybe. Well. This, Abigail Thomas, is deeply profound.
As I move closer to the end gate, life takes on new meaning for me. "Youth" really "is wasted on the young." I'm glad I've lived long enough to share your wisdom that nothing really is mine. Everything, including my children, is lent to me for a time, and then I need to learn to let it go. Thank you for the gifts of your wisdom, Abby. Can't wit for your next book!. xoxo
