I enjoyed this one immensely. I loved all the items hanging on the clothes line. The colors added to the excitement. So much to look at. It felt like a happy place… to me. And bunnies! Who doesn’t love bunnies!! Sneaking in the war plane bunny brought me back to reality. Yes, I need to start on some ovals myself…

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you very much. So happy you liked it. I snuck the war plan in, having taken a few angry things out. I can't recommend ovals highly enough, no idea why.

I wear the same thing every day at home too. I call them my house uniforms. And for the same reason. Only when I go out do I bother to look presentable. I don't even wear makeup anymore. Lymphoma has sapped me. But I got a transfusion a week ago and that high octane stuff really put some color back in my cheeks!

So I'm making pretty roses in pottery class and loving it. Not as easy as it sounds, working with clay. I'll glaze them with different shades of red after they've been fired.

Keep making those ovals, Abby. Anything to get away from the f..ing news.

I love that you wear the same things too! I also wear them into the world, because who really cares? Pottery, what a wonderful physical delight. On the wheel? Handbuillding? I did handbuilding for a year or two, also not good at it, but loved it. Roses you must be making by hand. Lovely. I hope the transfusion gives you energy for as long as you need the extra help. It must be difficult to go through what you go through. You impress the hell out of me. Thank you again. Woould love to see your roses.

Thanks, Abby. BTW, had fun wth you and Darien on Sunday. Anxious to see the chapbook when finished.

When I finish painting a rose, I'll post a picture. Might be weeks away. Very delicate work and I'm just learning.

Blood cancer is rough cuz it's everywhere. But I think the transfusions will help. Going to the Amalfi Coast in Italy in October and want to be able to walk up and down those hills!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Everywhere. Rough is a brave word for that. So glad you are taking such a beautiful trip. I hope you will send photographs of yourself there. And I look forward to your rose.

We had fun too. What a good workshop that was. I loved being there.

Take good care of yourself.

Gosh, Abby, look how many folks flew out of the “sleeping in my clothes” closet!!! Tres grey (and possibly just a tad gay.) A public service piece. The artwork is the best in our age group since Grandma Moses. Better, because more lyrical. Rock on, my multi-talented and always splendored inspiration.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Susan, you are going overboard with compliments! I will happily take them with a lot of salt, and thank you very much. You are the one with real talent. Your painting is , well, fantastic.

You're new approach to laundry is very environmental! We're all being cautioned to wash less. It seems laundry is polluting. Like everything else.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Yes, like everything else. Glad to hear my laziness is good for the environment. Thank you!

God, you're so carefreely (new word) funny. Makes my heart really happy. And I feel validated. I wear the same thing often for 2-3 days at a time. I mean, why not? If I'm not going anywhere and have perfume available, it makes perfect sense to me to do the wear, repeat, wear thing. Three cheers for less laundry and more drawing to lighten the load, so to speak.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

2-3 days at a time is not the record. I won't even hint at the record, but I think I hold it securely. Thank you Jeanne. And hooray for pretty much anything that lightens the load these days. Drawing does work. As long as oerfection is kept out of the picture. (See what I did there?)

Whether you are writing or drawing never let anything mess with your fun. I have also simplified my clothing. I basically have two of everything, one to wear and one dirty, and often wear the same thing for two or three days and now and then four. Just don't care any more! That is a good feeling.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

It is so freeing not to care!. Sort of like flying. Especially about things we used to. But fun is becoming more important to hang onto with both hands.

. Four days of the same clothes? I won't tell you my record. After a while I stopped counting.

I see simple real life talent in your drawings! Examining the items reveals a fleeting memorable time of my mom hanging laundry on the pulley Clothesline from our backyard fire escape platform, one end tied to the iron and the other end to the telephone pole across the yard below. Long John’s my dad wore, and house dresses of my moms. Almost like seeing a picture book on your line creating an action memory and more. Thanks for sharing another cherished piece by you! I almost forgot the ever present bag of clothespins…some with springs and some with just a wooden opening like slits to hold the towels…. And then at Christmas “stealing” some to create toy wooden soldier or wooden girls both colored with markers and glued on yarn hair. Ribbon tied around their necks to hang upon the fresh pine tree we always managed to have! Amazing what a clothesline can trigger in the recesses of a mind.

It's true. The seemingly insignificant things, too, that we remember with such pleasure.

Thank you. I loved your memories.

I absolutely love this piece and the drawing! I too repeat clothes frequently, sometimes for days. So much less laundry. We mothers have done so much laundry in our lifetimes we’ve earned this right. And I love the permission you give us to draw whatever occurs to us. Including ovals.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you very much! My least favorite part of laundry is the folding and putting away part. Sometimes clean laundry sits iin the basket for weeks, becoming my erzats bureau, my very small closet. But i don't give a hoot.

I just love what you drew !

It inspired me to think of making a wall quilt , similar , yet not the same.

And yes it is ART ! 🩵

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you very much for saying it is art. I will never believe that, but it’s awfully nice to hear. Wouldlove to see your wall quilt when you’ve made it!

I have very cool taste, so of course I enjoyed this. Is it just me, or do some of those clothespins look like bunny ears?

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Now that you mention it, yes! They do! Thank you for your very cool taste liking it.

Well this rocks! I loooove this!

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you! I love that!

How do you mean 'it's not art'? It's brilliant.

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Thank you for saying that. I don't feel brilliant at all. But I do like haing some fun, especially the kind that has no consequences. You are lovely to say that.

My mother in law had the single pole, revolving round about line, you could swing it around fast. She'd pack it full like a work of art, a tathered cloth bag held the pins. Someday it was for hanging cream in cheesecloth, one day to be butter. Started some ovals, size of pinheads. WiP. You spread so much joy! 💌

Abigail Thomas's avatar

It sounds like your mother had a pretty good time herself! What a good way to grow up. Thank you for such a very nice compliment.

Too much laundering hastens the demise of clothes -- not good for them. Also, hot water is hard on fabric and who knows what all the added chemicals of today do to the fibers. Ii heartily embrace free-form thinking that happens with doodling, drawing, painting ... and the color --isn't it fun??

Abigail Thomas's avatar

It is fun, as much fun as I've ever had. Thank you.

Abigail, Love your "Clothes Line". You say you are not good at it ... IMHO ... you are. The "Clothesline" may be labeled "A Primative" but that is a compliment and where its charm comes from. It could also be labeled "Outsider Art" and that also is a compliment. Some artists spend a lifetime trying to recapure their childhood in art, before all the training, and never get there. I look forward to seeing more of your art. P.S. "333" is my favorite time of the day and or night, and "3" is my lucky number. Fondly, Michael

Abigail Thomas's avatar

Oh wow. I have been collecting Outsider Art for years now, it's my favorite kind of art. You paid me an enormous compliment. Thank you.

Michael Horvich's avatar

Abigail, How did I sense that? Would you like to feaure some of your art on my GUEST COLLECTIONS Tuesday’s posts and tell a little about how you came to collect Outsider Art? Check my site to see two other collectors photos, Fondly, Michael
